Season Iconic Moments

Haiden Deegan at Fort Worth

Unlike the 450 class where four different riders have won, Haiden Deegan (1-1) dominated again, this time after pulling both holeshots and leading wire to wire in both motos.

At the triple points paying Las Vegas finale, Deegan can finish third and still win the title. He’s +19 on Tom Vialle (3-2). Vialle finished second overall and Honda’s Jo Shimoda (2-3) continues to impress after being only 5 weeks removed from a broken collarbone.

The 250 class lost quite a few riders before gates even dropped. Jalek Swoll, who crashed out of Charlotte moto 1 announced he was done for the season. Chance Hymas withdrew to rest his knee. Casey Cochran also sat out after crashing in Charlotte.

2024 450SMX Champion: Jett Lawrence

For the second consecutive year, Jett Lawrence won the 450 SuperMotocross World Champion and this time he did it with two completely new challengers in the field: his own brother, Hunter Lawrence, and Eli Tomac.

Jett (1-3-1 for the season) ended the night tied in points with Hunter but won the title on wins. His SMX cash haul: $1,225,000. The SMX title is Jett’s 8th total, 4th in the 450 class.

Hunter (4-1-2 in SMX) finished second in points and took home $660,000.

Sexton started the SMX season with the #1 seed for the second year in a row but suffered bad luck at the finale once again. On the opening lap of moto 1, he moved into Justin Barcia’s line through a rhythm section. Barcia landed on top of Sexton’s right hand/shoulder (suffered a bone contusion in his hand). Neither rider crashed but Sexton pulled off the track and never returned to action. He tumbled to 7th in points.

Hunter Lawrence Wins Fort Worth SMX

After coming so close in both Supercross and Pro Motocross, Hunter Lawrence (1-3) got his first ever 450 win in the penultimate round of his rookie season AND took over the 450SMX points lead.

At Texas Motor Speedway, the math finally worked in Hunter’s favor (he won 3 Pro Motocross opening motos but no overalls). Costly mistakes in moto one caused his brother Jett Lawrence (3-2) to cough up his shot at the win. The younger Lawrence took a rare third.

The opening moto featured the Lawrence brothers and Eli Tomac (2-5) in a classic battle. Tomac hunted them down from 6 seconds back but couldn’t make a pass stick on Hunter.

Chase Sexton (4-1) was a non-factor in moto one but ran away with moto two, opening a double digit lead before cruising to a 9-second + victory.

Four different 450 riders won the first four motos of the 2024 SMX series, which was one more moto than riders who won the 22 motos in Pro Motocross.

250 East Winner: Tom Vialle

Tom Vialle led from start to finish to claim his second 250SX win one week after taking his first. He left Alabama with a 1 point lead, which means he jumped from 18th in points to the championship lead in just three rounds.

Vialle’s first and second main event wins happened back to back. Coincidentally, fellow Frenchman Dylan Ferrandis was the last 250SX rider to pull this off (2019).

2024: Jett is Birmingham’s First

In Birmingham Alabama’s first ever SX Jett Lawrence became the first rider of the 2024 season to win back to back races and he did it in convincing style, leading every lap.

Cooper Webb, who nearly collided with the 30-second card girl on lap one, made a dent in the lead but Lawrence was able to match the pace and never let Webb get too close. Lawrence left Birmingham with a 13 point lead over Webb.

250 East Winner: Tom Vialle

France’s Tom Vialle wins the Daytona Supercross, his first ever 250SX victory.

He is the third different winner in as many 250SX East rounds and moved to 4th in the championship standings (-3).

Vialle led 7 of the 11 laps and set the 5 fastest lap times of the main event.

2024: “Yeah, I’m back”

Just 66 days after surgery on his left thumb, Jett Lawrence (2-1) won the opening round of the 2024 SuperMotocross World Championships by tracking down Eli Tomac (1-2) in the second moto.

Tomac’s first moto win was a welcome surprise for the fans and the series. He missed the 2023 MX and SMX seasons. Of the 26 laps run in Charlotte, Tomac led all but 4; he led wire to wire for the moto 1 win and had to work around his teammate Justin Cooper in moto two.

Lawrence started third and worked his way into second on lap 4. He battled Tomac late in the moto and made his move on lap 11.

Chase Sexton (4-3) finished third overall and was overhead saying he battled his setup. Sexton left Charlotte with a +4 advantage over J. Lawrence in the points.

Haiden Deegan (1-1) won the 250SMX class in an absolute statement ride.
