Attention Yinzers! We’re off to Pittsburgh!

Pack your bobos and bumbershoots and brush up on your Pittsburghese because we’re going to the Steel City, the City of Bridges, Iron City, the city that has more nicknames than Apollo Creed!

The last time Supercross visited Pittsburgh, Terry Bradshaw was still a Steelers QB and the Penguins were the worst team in the NHL.

In 1978 and 1983 Supercross ran in the now-demolished Three Rivers Stadium. The 1978 round was held in mid-May on what cheekily became known as “Mudder’s Day Weekend” because the race is infamously remembered for earning a Wall Street Journal cover story due to its inability to quickly exit the stadium.

Bob Hannah won in rain showers and a come-from-behind thriller. But the rain continued for days and delayed and complicated the removal of the 300 truckloads of dirt so much that the Pittsburgh Pirates nearly had to postpone a home stand against the NY Mets.

The Wall Street Journal for May 23, 1978 featured a story about the first ever Pittsburgh Supercross.

“Three Rivers Stadium here because one-lake stadium during a solid week of rain that started on May 12,” read the article penned by Gay Sands Miller. “It wouldn’t have been so bad on the well-drained artificial turf stadium–except for the 300 truckloads of dirt that had been hauled in and spread over the field for a ‘dirt bike’ motorcycle race.”

Venue: Acrisure Stadium is an open-air, 68,400 capacity football stadium, formerly known as Heinz Field. Home to the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, Acrisure sits next to the original site of Three Rivers Stadium.

  • Officially opened August 18, 2001 with an N’ Sync concert.
  • Must do: take a ride on the Duquesne Incline for the best view of Pittsburgh. Visit the Hall of Honor Museum within Acrisure Stadium. It’s located bear Gate B and open from 11-4 p.m.
  • While you might not equate Supercross with Pittsburgh, motocross has a rich history in the area. Steel City Raceway was just 20 minutes to the east. High Point Raceway is 70 miles to the south and just 20 miles further south is the headquarters of MX Sports.
  • In the greater region is the American Motorcyclist Association in Pickerington, OH and the eastern offices of KTM North America in Amherst, OH.
  • Pittsburgh Fun Fact: In the fall of 1971, Three Rivers Stadium hosted the first ever World Series night game.

Tampa Returns

  • Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium is back on the schedule for the first time since 2023.
  • Feld Entertainment’s headquarters are in nearby Bradenton, Florida.

Foxborough: Early and Back to Back

  • April 5 is the earliest a Foxborough round has ever been held (April 13 in 2024)
  • This will be the first time Foxborough has held rounds in back to back seasons since 1983-1984.
  • Also for the first time ever, Foxborough and East Rutherford are running in the same season.

We will continue to add to this report throughout the week…
