Pittsburgh

Acrisure Stadium

Steel City, City of Bridges, Iron City and for deep history buffs, the original “Gateway to the West”. Pittsburgh’s Supercross history is (very) brief, having hosted only two rounds in the old Three Rivers Stadium (1978 & 1983). After a 42 year hiatus, Yinzers are getting a Soupy in 2025!

Fast Facts

Iconic Moments

A few highlights from the Pittsburgh Supercross, which first appeared on the schedule in 1978.

1983: Supercross Returns to Iron City

Supercross returned to Pittsburgh in July 1983 and Broc Glover came to Three Rivers Stadium riding high on a six moto 500cc Pro Motocross win streak. He maintained that momentum, winning both qualifiers and leading every lap of the main event. It was his first Supercross win of 1983 and 7th of his career.

Honda’s Bob Hannah injured his wrist in Orlando a month earlier. He rode a few laps of practice in Pittsburgh but he was too sore to compete.

1978: Mudder's Day

The 1978 Pittsburgh Supercross in Three Rivers Stadium cheekily became known as “Mudder’s Day Weekend” because the race is infamously remembered for earning a Wall Street Journal cover story due to its inability to quickly exit the stadium.

Bob Hannah won in rain showers and in a come-from-behind thriller over Marty Tripes but the rain, which continued for days, delayed and complicated the dirt removal to the point that MLB’s Pittsburgh Pirates nearly had to postpone games.

1978: Joy in Mudville

Supercross hit the front page of The Wall Street Journal on May 23, 1978 in a feature story about Pittsburgh’s promoters struggling to remove dirt from the venue.

From the article: “Three Rivers Stadium here became one-lake stadium during a solid week of rain that started May 12. It wouldn’t have been so bad on the well-drained artificial turf stadium–except for the 300 truckloads of dirt that had been hauled in and spread over the field for a ‘dirt bike’ motorcycle race.”
