Santa Jose / Santa Clara

Santa Clara, CA

The Sunshine State’s rich history of two wheel racing holds many legends. From Anaheim to San Diego and Hangtown to Glen Helen, California has often been a hotspot of epic competition. One of the less remembered Supercross destinations in the state are the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara, which sit just 20 minutes apart and have hosted 8 Supercross rounds over the years.

When San Jose joined the Supercross calendar in 1990, it became the fifth Californian stop on the calendar (Anaheim, San Diego, Pasadena, Los Angeles). Spartan Stadium, named after San Jose State University’s football team which played in the building, hosted six rounds from 1990 to 1995.

Instead of returning to San Francisco’s Oracle Park, Supercross added a round in 2015 and 2016 to Santa Clara’s Levi’s Stadium. The home of the San Francisco 49ers hosted two rounds in the early days of the state of the art venue, which also hosted Super Bowl 50.

1990-Closer To History

The first ever San Jose Supercross was a pivotal win for Jeff Stanton. With his victory, the Honda ace moved 14 points clear of teammate Jean-Michel Bayle and put himself in prime position to become the first back to back Supercross champ in a decade. The main event started with a pair of Jeffs fighting for the lead, with Stanton and Jeff Ward swapping the top spot. Stanton grabbed the lead near the halfway mark and rode away, with Bayle and Mike Kiedrowski passing Ward to secure a Honda podium sweep. The next week, Stanton would clinch the title and become the first rider since Bob Hannah (1977, 78 and 79) to win consecutive premier class Supercross championships.

1993-A Piece of History

Jeremy McGrath wrapped up his first of seven premier class Supercross titles at the previous round, but continued putting his stamp on the record books in San Jose. McGrath’s victory at Spartan Stadium was his 10th of the season, surpassing Damon Bradshaw’s mark from the previous year for the most wins in a single season. McGrath put in another incredible performance, leading every lap and taking a wire to wire win. The only rider close to him in the main event was fellow Honda rider Jeff Stanton, who couldn’t make up enough ground to stop a history making run.
