Located near the city of Binghamton, Broome-Tioga was one of New York’s two premier Motocross destinations for decades. Characterized by rolling hills and naturally rocky terrain, the track hosted races from 1979 to 2006, until it sold its date to Freestone Raceway in Texas.
Venues
Broome-Tioga Sports Center hosted 28 nationals from its first race in 1979 to the track’s last hurrah in 2006. The track is still open today, hosting some local races and practice days. The venue gave up its date on the calendar to Freestone Raceway due to rising maintenance costs, and perhaps due to the close proximity to Unadilla (1 hour apart).
Iconic Moments
From a decisive victory that led to a championship to the GOAT winning his last crown, Broome-Tioga was home to some iconic moments in its time on the schedule.
1979-Tying Things Up
A pair of 125 class rivals battled it out for the overall win in the inaugural Broome-Tioga National, with Mark BarnettĀ bestingĀ Broc Glover. In the first moto, points leader Glover got out front early, but went down in a corner and fell back to fourth. The beneficiary was Brian Myerscough, who won the moto aboard his Suzuki. A thrilling second moto battle commenced with Warren Reid joining Glover and Barnett up front. Reid held the top spot after another Glover spill but Barnett turned on the jets, blasting by both with ten minutes to go. Barnett’s 3-1 just beat Glover’s 2-2 as he became the first 125 winner in the track’s history.
1992-A Pivotal Sweep
The 1992 championship chase in the 500MX class was tight heading into Broome-Tioga, with two riders holding the top spot in points. Honda’s Jeff Stanton and Kawasaki’s Mike Kiedrowski were deadlocked after the first three rounds, and had just three more to stake their claim as the top rider in the class. Kiedrowski put in a statement ride, going 1-1 and securing the points lead. Stanton held the lead early in the first moto, but a bobble allowed the rookie to take the lead aboard his Kawasaki. Kiedrowski then went wire to wire to score the second moto win. Perhaps the most pivotal detail in the championship fight is that Kiedrowski won the title a few weeks later by just three points, meaning that his perfect day at Broome-Tioga was a major reason for his championship success.
2006-The Final Title
With two rounds left in the 2006 Motocross season, Ricky Carmichael put the stamp on his tenth consecutive MX championship. In his final full-time season, Carmichael was his usual, dominant self. With Chad Reed pulling out of the final rounds thanks to a shoulder injury, the G.O.A.T. claimed his seventh straight premier class outdoor title with a 1-1 day. The first moto was a typical Carmichael ride, but he had to work hard in the second moto, passing James Stewart in a comeback ride to sweep the day.
Speaking of sweeps, Suzuki swept the overalls as Broc Hepler won in the 250 class (1-3). The championship momentum swung in Ryan Villopoto‘s favor, as Mike Alessi went out of the first moto early, resulting in Alessi going from a five point lead to a 20 point deficit.
