Is a Hoelshot Possible for Malcolm Stewart?

Mookie has never pulled a holeshot in his 450SX career. His average first lap position isn’t pretty.

Malcolm Stewart is a terrible starter. That’s not conjecture. It’s fact; his average 2024 holeshot position (white line) was 14.3 in the traditional 20+1 main events.

Among the top 20 riders in the 2024 Monster Energy Supercross Championship standings, only Benny Bloss (15th) and Kyle Chisholm (17th) had worse average holeshot positions.

Even in 2022, the best season of his career (3rd overall!), his average hoelshot position of 7.9 was the worst of the top 7 riders in points, and 1.1 position worse than the next closest in that group (Justin Barcia, 6.8)

Stewart has never pulled a holeshot in his 450SX career, not in a main, or even a Triple Crown race. So it’s not surprising that he’s led just 13 laps in his 104 career 450SX main event starts.

But wait! Stewart grabbed two (2!) holeshots at the Paris Supercross in November.

“It was a good spark,” he said at Media Days. “Boosted my confidence.”

Better starts will be the key for adding to his podium count and are crucial to his fight to get a first (or more) wins.

He says he feels like he’s back to his 2022 self and he’s even enjoyed training and riding with Bam Bam.

“I’ve learned a lot riding with Justin [Barcia]. He’s a great rider and I respect him. At one point I really disliked the guy.”

Stewart will be with Rockstar Husqvarna Factory Racing for a fourth season and, unlike his previous three years on the team, he’ll be the only rider on the FC 450.
