Venues

Supercross has a history competing at legendary domed stadiums in the US. From previous legends such as the Pontiac Silverdome and the Astrodome to modern marvels such as Lucas Oil Stadium and US Bank Stadium, domes have kept riders out of the elements and placed a focus on racing. The Superdome in New Orleans (currently known as Caesars Superdome) has appeared on and off the Supercross schedule for decades. Along with Supercross, the venue has hosted some of the biggest events in sports, including the Super Bowl, NCAA Final Four and WrestleMania. The Superdome’s time on the schedule began in 1977, running through 1980 when the stadium hosted a doubleheader. It returned from 1998-2002, and made one off appearances in 2009 and 2012.

Iconic Moments

The New Orleans Supercross has its own unique history, including one of the south’s greatest racers winning in his home event.

1977-Louisiana Fast

The first ever New Orleans Supercross took place in June 1977, with the round being sponsored by the famous Popeye’s restaurant chain. An eventful main event started with carnage, as Danny LaPorte, Chuck Sun and others hitting the ground. Honda’s Marty Smith took the holeshot and early lead with Bob Hannah right behind him. Smith maintained a fairly small lead throughout the event to score the win, as Hannah and Jimmy Ellis completed the podium.

1998-Bayou Bragging Rights

20-year-old rookie Kevin Windham was a rising star in the premier class heading into his first ever home state race. Windham won at Charlotte the previous year while still competing in the 125 class, proving to many that he would be a force for years to come. At New Orleans in 1998, the Yamaha pilot grabbed the holeshot and led Larry Ward and Mickael Pichon early. Windham cruised in the lead despite points leader Jeremy McGrath moving to second, navigating the ruts for his second career 250SX victory. Over 36,000 people witnessed the local hero win his heat race and lead the main event wire to wire on a track that claimed several victims, with Windham saying in a podium interview that he felt as if he was on top of the world after winning in Cajun country.
