2026 Houston SX

RD04 | Houston

We return to Houston for the first time since 2023

1974: Something to Taco 'Bout

The second (of two) rounds of the 1974 Yamaha Super Series of Motocross took place at Houston Atrodome, one week after round 1 in Daytona. Washington’s Jim Pomeroy (3-1-1-2) won the overall on his Bultaco after four motos (and two days).

Crowds of 17,000 and 24,000 watched the Flying Dutchman, Pierre Karsmakers win the “big money” as the overall series winner. We now know Karsmakers as the first ever premier class Supercross champion.

2012: Stewart Almost Retires

While Ryan Villopoto left round 13 of the 2012 SX series with another victory, James Stewart sat on a track barrier and contemplated his future. In his fourth season on a Yamaha, Stewart wasn’t gelling with the new YZ450F, which featured a backwards engine.

In Houston, Stewart started mid-pack and crashed hard while trying to get to the front. Years later, Stewart explained that he almost quit that night, following three seasons of crashes and mental battles.

Justin Barcia wins Houston 1 2021
2021: A Different Shade of Red

As California remained locked down during the COVID-19 pandemic, Houston hosted the opening three rounds of the 2021 Supercross series. Justin Barcia, who won the opening round of the series in both 2019 and 2020, did it for a third consecutive season, this time in a different city, and on a different bike brand.

The Troy Lee Designs team moved up to the 450 class to be the official factory effort of GasGas, signing Barcia after he spent three years with Yamaha. Barcia held off Ken Roczen to win brand’s Supercross debut.
