Local Riders @ The Wick 338
By
Locals have a distinct advantage at The Wick 338, which has held Pro Motocross races going back to 1976. It’s one of the longest running races on today’s circuit and has a ‘tradition’ of local riders racing the pace of the best in the world.
Jim Boschen was one of those local pros. He qualified 5 straight years in the late 1980s and early 1990s and he explains it best in our recent epic: “Southwick 1998: John Dowd, Doug Henry & New England’s Best Day Ever.”

“It was almost like the track was smoother even though it’s still rough as heck,” Boschen said. “Someone who knows how to ride that track on a regular day is going to be able to go even faster on pro day. The lines are still there, they’re just faster.”
This partly explains how Jimmy Decotis (Beverly, MA – 250MX) and Michael Sottile (Marlborough, MA – 450MX) set the overall fastest qualifying times in their classes in 2023 and 2011, respectively

By far the most notable locals are John Dowd and Doug Henry. In addition to winning a combined five overalls at The Wick they also had stellar professional careers decorated with championships, wins, and podiums.
Indisputably, they top the list of locals at Southwick, but the chart below shows just how many locals have had some level of success on National weekend.
After you’ve checked out the list, head over to the @wewentfast Instagram page and share a memory from the Southwick national.
