What Really Happened in Salt Lake City?

By Arich Knaub

Cooper Webb wasn’t the fastest in 2025. He didn’t win the most races, either. But none of that matters when you walk away a three-time Supercross Champion. Titles aren’t won on raw speed alone, Ryan Dungey showed us that years ago, and Webb just gave us a masterclass in exactly how to do it again.

We can argue about how Chase Sexton (more than once) let the title slip away, or how missing names like Jett Lawrence and Eli Tomac changed the dynamic. But facts are facts: Cooper Webb just wrapped up one of the most complete, consistent seasons of his career.

Webb and Sexton were the only two riders to finish inside the top 10 at every round. The difference? Webb made the podium 13 times and logged 16 Top 5 finishes. That consistency paid off. He took the championship by just 2 points.

A 14th podium would have been a personal record but he settled in a comfortable 4th place.

Let’s be frank; Webb is fast. He is one of the fastest supercross riders on the planet. Supercross tracks come down to four core features: Flats, Jumping, Sand, and Whoops. Webb ranks 1st or 2nd in everything but whoops, long considered his Achilles’ heel. Pretty good for a guy who isn’t considered “fast”. Rankings were created by first ranking riders based on the track sector’s primary feature, and then averaging that feature over the entire season.

Back-to-Back 250 East Champion

Tom Vialle needed a miracle; in just five laps, he’d slipped from 2nd to 5th. He needed to pass Seth Hammaker for a second consecutive 250 East Championship.

The title was slipping away. When Hammaker and R.J. Hampshire tangled, the door cracked open. But what won Vialle the championship wasn’t entirely luck; it was how he capitalized on it.

He dropped his lap time from a 50.1 to 49.2 and launched a charge. Vialle was the fastest rider on the track in the two laps immediately following Hampshire and Hammaker’s crash.

Vialle’s season wasn’t entirely easy either. Remember, he finished last in Foxborough. In fact, it wasn’t an easy season for any East Coast rider. Ultimately, Vialle won the championship in a similar vein to Webb. Consistent Top 5 finishes, strong podiums, and a touch of luck.
