Iconic Moments

A few highlights from the East Rutherford Supercross, which first appeared on the schedule in 1987.

1987: Rick Johnson Extends the Fight

Jeff Ward (pictured) had a chance to wrap up the championship at the inaugural East Rutherford Supercross on June 7, 1987 but he jammed his ankle while leading on lap eight and crashed on lap nine because his foot was so numb.

Rick Johnson, who stared the race in 9th, came back to win over Ron Lechien and Eddie Warren, in front of 28,672. Ward finished 5th and claimed the title 20 days later, despite a broken ankle.

2017: Dungey's Early Christmas Gift

Entering the penultimate round of 2017, Eli Tomac had won nine main events and held a +3 series lead over Ryan Dungey. On lap three of the main event, Tomac fell while leading and, bizarrely, was slow to remount. He finished the lap in 15th and the race in 8th.

Marvin Musquin led 13 of the final 14 laps but made a “mistake” near the end of the 24th lap when he went wide and seemingly handed over the lead to his teammate Dungey. It was the final win of Dungey’s career. He retired after winning the championship in Las Vegas, one week later.

2023: Muddy Madness

Before the main events, lightning and thunderstorms caused a 90-minute delay (and evacuation of the stadium) and left the race track a quagmire. Ken Roczen led the first 6 laps of the 17-min. +1 lap final but Justin Barcia, took over the lead on lap 7 and pulled out a 14.7 sec. lead for his first win in over two years. Barcia lapped through 5th place.

In 250SX, Max Anstie scored the first Supercross victory of his journeyman career and the first for Firepower Honda.

Venues

MetLife Stadium: After a 23 year gap, Supercross returned to East Rutherford in 2014 to run in MetLife, an open air, 82,500 capacity venue that serves as home field to both the NFL’s Giants and Jets. MetLife hosted Super Bowl XLVIII in Feb. 2014 and held its first SX race 11 weeks later.

Giants Stadium: Colloquially known as The Meadowlands, Giants Stadium held five consecutive SX rounds between 1987-1991. First opened in 1976, it held its final NFL game in Jan. 2010 and was demolished that same year.
