The Oldest (and youngest) 450SX points leaders

By Brett Smith

Eli Tomac continues to break barriers and prove age is just a number.

At 32 years, 2 months and 4 days, Eli Tomac is the oldest rider in Supercross history to hold the 450SX points lead.

It’s yet another hat tip toward the scroll of milestones Tomac is reeling off in the 2025 SuperMotocross World Championship Season.

The list of oldest to hold the red plate shows Tomac has three of the top five spots. And let’s not forget that the title he won nearly three years ago earned him the record as oldest Supercross champion.

Eli Tomac took over the 2025 points chase at 32 years, 2 months.

The chances of a teenager leading the 450SX points in 2025 are 0%, but let’s look at the opposite end of this category. Who are the youngest riders to lead the points?

In 2024, Jett Lawrence just edged out Bob Hannah (1977) for 10th youngest.

Ken Roczen is the only other still active rider on this list. He was 19 when he won the 2014 season opener.

Why Damon Bradshaw is The Beast from the East

Damon Bradshaw is an absolute legend. At just 17, he won the first two rounds of the 1990 season before crashing out (while leading) at round three in San Diego. He fell to third in the points.

Bradshaw also owns the fifth on the youngest chart; he led much of the 1992 series on the strength of nine main event wins.

Extending out out beyond the top 10, Bradshaw also owns the #13 spot for topping the points after round 2 in 1993.

The Glaring Hole in Ron Lechien’s Career

Can you spot what feels like a glaring omission on the youngest chart? Ron Lechien never held the points lead in Supercross. His Krytponite was slow starts to the season.

Lechien was 16 when he won the 1983 Orlando Supercross and became the youngest race winner in series championship history. But he didn’t enter the 1983 season until round four in Atlanta (where he failed to qualify!)

In 1984, as a 17-year-old, he didn’t even get on the podium until his 6th start of the season.

And in 1985, at 18, he won the most races of the season (3) and finished just three points behind Jeff Ward and Broc Glover in the final points. It was the 12th and 11th place finishes at rounds one and two that ultimately cost him from winning the title.

Finally, in 1987, the freshly 20-year-old Lechien finished second at the season opener in Anaheim buuuuuut…. DNF-ed at round two in Houston (21st.)

It could be a while before any new names jump into the top ten of the youngest list. Haiden Deegan will turn 20 at the beginning of 2026 season but he claims he’s not moving to the 450 full-time until 2027.

If 17-year-old 250SX rookie Kiwi Cole Davies catches fire…
