Situated in a valley on a family farm in southwestern Pennsylvania and just 18 miles north of the MX Sports headquarters, High Point Raceway has been a cornerstone of the Pro Motocross schedule since 1977. The venue has always been a holiday weekend destination, first Memorial Day, and now on Father’s Day weekend.
Iconic Moments
From a Pennsylvanian winning the top prize in American Motocross to a pair of legends scoring their final wins, the track has hosted many pivotal races since 1977.
1977: Home State Heroics
The first ever High Point Pro Motocross was the final round of the 1977 250MX championship, held Memorial Day weekend and Pennsylvania native Tony DiStefano wrapped the championship after the first moto.
Honda’s Marty Smith had been in the title fight right up until the previous round when his RC250 blew up. He needed to beat Tony D. in High Point’s opening moto to stay in contention but couldn’t match the Suzuki rider’s speed. The title was DiStefano’s third in a row.
1991: Stanton vs. Bradshaw
Honda’s Jeff Stanton and Yamaha’s Damon Bradshaw traded moto wins in 1991. In moto one, 18-year-old Bradshaw won, despite letting Stanton by during the race to pick up on his line choices. He later made an aggressive but clean move and pulled away.
In moto two, Stanton passed Bradshaw and built a major gap as Bradshaw backed off. Points leader Jean-Michel Bayle went 3-4 after a moto two comeback following a first turn crash. Team Peak Honda’s Brian Swink (1-1) dominated the 125MX division, scoring his first (and only) overall win.
1997: Bradshaw's last stand.
A sloppy High Point Raceway made for a memorable Memorial Day mudder as Damon Bradshaw (3-1) won the final Pro Motocross of his career. Kawasaki’s Ryan Hughes won the first moto over John Dowd.
In the second moto, In moto two, Larry Ward held a 20 second lead until the 20,000 rain-soaked fans willed “The Beast From The East” to one last victory. “I figured if I just kept digging deeper and deeper, it might work out my way,” Bradshaw said.
2014: James Stewart's last win.
When Suzuki’s James Stewart took his first win of the 2014 season and a 1-1 sweep at High Point, no one expected the victory to be the last ever for The Fastest Man on the Planet.
Stewart was challenged throughout the day by KTM’s Ryan Dungey and Ken Roczen, as well as Honda’s Trey Canard, but Stewart maintained control. Fittingly, Stewart’s last overall win started with him taking the lead in the first moto after a brief battle with longtime rival Chad Reed.
Venues
While the track has undergone many tweaks over the years, every Pro Motocross held at High Point Raceway has taken place in the same amphitheater-like setting off Taylortown Road. The facility is located on the Holbert family farm while the major events are promoted by the Coombs family of MX Sports.
Family patriarch, the late Dave Coombs Sr. originally named it Hi-Point Raceway, after the gear & accessories company owned by John Penton. But when Penton balked at the $500 lifetime naming rights, Coombs changed name (and the sign he’d already made) to High Point.
The track also features many European style elements, such as elevation changes and off-camber corners that challenge the technical skills of the best riders in the world.
