Consider a 15-year-old small-town Australian kid in 1997. He has photos of American motocross racers taped to his walls. The words he read in the magazines where those pictures came from became gospel.

Burn through 5 gallons of gas every practice session?

OK. If that’s what it takes.

Less than six years later, that kid started winning races at the premier level of AMA Supercross.

Now Chad Reed is headed to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, an honor that’s easy to think is long overdue but 2025 is his first year of eligibility.

If 2003 seems like 10 years ago but 2020 seems like 20 years ago you’re not alone. We feel the same. Reed retired in 2020 after an impressive career that bridged a gap between the King of Supercross, Jeremy McGrath and the beginning of Jett Lawrence’s professional career.

Years from now, Lawrence – indubitably – will be the next Australian SX/MX rider voted into the AMA HoF.

Before Lawrence was even born, Reed had already won two Australian Supercross titles, stood on 7 MXGP podiums, won a 125SX East championship and had 8 premier class Supercross main event wins.

And all of that was just the beginning of his accumulation of accomplishments. His journey became the playbook for future nomads with dreams of racing in America.

Reed, from Kurri Kurri, New South Wales, will become just fourth Australian inducted into the AMA HoF, following motorcycle pioneer Dot Robinson and road racers Kel Caruthers and Mat Mladin.

He joins other foreign born champions such as France’s Jean-Michel Bayle, South Africa’s Grant Langston and Pierre Karsmakers of The Netherlands.
