2026 Anaheim 2 Research

By Brett Smith

Welcome (Back) to Anaheim!

The epicenter of Supercross racing in America, Anaheim’s Angel Stadium is ground zero for the sport. This weekend’s A2 will be the 87th Anaheim Supercross held.

  • Eli Tomac has 5 Anaheim wins. He’s locked in a 4-way tie for 5th most wins in this city.
  • Three of Tomac’s Anaheim wins were A2 (2018, 2020, 2022)
  • Ken Roczen also has 5 wins.
  • Jeremy McGrath, James Stewart, Ricky Carmichael and Chad Reed all have 8 wins.

450 Rider Facts

  • Eli Tomac (87) tied Jeremy McGrath (87) for the second most premier class wins (450SX+MX).
All-Time SX+MX Wins
  • Best starter this season – Eli Tomac and Hunter Lawrence are tied with an average of 2nd for 1st lap position.
  • Best speed this season – Eli Tomac. He’s averaging 1.5 in qualifying (best), 2.0 in heat (best), and 1.5 in the main (best).
  • Eli Tomac has led (30) more laps than he did all of the 2025 season (25).
  • Eli Tomac has won 3x at A2, but not since 2022. His last 3 A2 finishes – 6, 2, 7.
  • Heat Race wins: Ken Roczen (52 – most among active) and Eli Tomac (49 – 2nd most among active) have combined for 101 heat race wins!
  • Jason Anderson (2,767 pts, 8th all-time) is -15 points behind Ryan Dungey (2,787 pts, 7th all-time). He needs to finish 7th to tie Dungey and 6th or better to pass him.
  • Joey Savatgy gets another top 5 – he did so twice in 2025 (SLC and Philadelphia)
  • Hunter Lawrence with 2nd place ties his career best (Denver 2024).
  • Jorge Prado qualified a career best 2nd in San Diego. His previous best was 6th (the week before at A1).
  • Deja Vu. Chase Sexton hits the gate for the second time in as many years. See Detroit 2025.
  • Chase Sexton doesn’t have a podium yet. He’s had at least 1 podium thru the first two rounds in each of the last 3 seasons (2023-25).
  • Max Miller made his second career 450 main event last week in San Diego (22nd). His first was Nashville 2023 since his first main event (18th). He got in via the last transfer position in the LCQ.
  • Cooper Webb’s 29 points is not the fewest he’s scored within two rounds. In 2024 he scored 27 and in 2018 he scored 24. But no top 5s in the first two rounds raises eyebrows (see more below).
  • Yamaha has not finished in the top 5 at either round. They had 4 total top 5 finishes thru 2 rounds in 2025.
  • KTM, Suzuki, and Honda each have 3 top 5 finishes.

  • Dilan Schwartz’s 9th in San Diego tied his career best finish of 9th in Atlanta from 2021.

Defending Champs Sloooow Starts

It’s been over 20 years since a defending champion has been as far behind in points as Cooper Webb is right now. Webb’s 7-8 finishes have put him in a rare position. He’s -21 points to Eli Tomac, the biggest defending champion deficit since 2005 when Chad Reed was -22 after 16-3 finishes to start the season. Chad Reed went on to finish 2nd in 2005.

But it’s not unusual for a defending champion to start out slow the next season as you can see with the Top 10 list below. It’s also not unusual to see them come back and win the title after starting in such a deficit: Bob Hannah in 1978, Jeff Stanton in 1990, Ryan Villopoto in 2013, and Ricky Carmichael in 2002 all came back from early SNAFUs to win the title from similar points deficits.

  • In 2002, Ricky Carmichael had a similar (albeit more severe) situation as Webb. The points leader had a perfect 50 points while RC’s DNF-4 and put him 31 points down.
  • Another rarity: The last time (an active) defending champion finished outside the top 5 at BOTH rounds 1 & 2 was 1982 when Mark Barnett finished 9th at Anaheim and 15th at Seattle 1. Barnett lost the title to Donnie Hansen by -21 points.
Top 10 Biggest Points Deficit – Defending Champ After 2 Rounds
  • NOTE: all other champions in the above table had at least 1 top 5 finish in the first 2 rounds. Webb has no top five finishes.

With Webb we’ve learned to ‘never say never’. That said, he’s got his work cut out for him. Eli Tomac is riding incredible, Ken Roczen similarly, and while Chase Sexton hasn’t had great finishes, his speed is there and he just needs better starts (1st lap pos of 8th A1 and 12th SD).

Oh, and Hunter Lawrence has emerged at the same caliber he’s shown in Pro Motocross.

More All-Time Eli Tomac

You’d think it’d be difficult to highlight such achievements week in, week out, but that’s how good Eli Tomac is riding right now.

As previously noted, he’s now tied Jeremy McGrath for the most premier class wins in SX+MX history. Another 37 wins and he can tie Ricky Carmichael (hopefully that reminds you why RC is the GOAT).

Most Premier Class Wins All-Time (SX+MX)
Fun Tomac Facts
  • 186 starts: 7th all-time (-4 to Larry Ward and Justin Brayton)
  • 55 wins (2nd all-time)
  • First time since 2023 that he’s won more than 1 main event in a season.
    • Note he held the red plate 12 of 17 rounds in 2023. He lost the points lead after round 16 where he tore his Achilles tendon.
  • The last time he had won back-to-back mains was 2023 round 11 Seattle and round 12 Glendale.
  • The last time he has won three in a row was 2022 (Rounds 8-12, 5 in a row)
  • Podiums: 104 (3rd, -7 to Jeremy McGrath)
  • San Diego was his 10th win over the age of 30. Most of any rider.

Looking forward, here’s what’s most interesting…

  • 13 different riders have opened the season 17x with back-to-back wins. 10 of the 17x that rider has gone on to win the title. That’s 59% of the time…
  • Only 4 riders have opened the season with 3 or more wins. Those riders went on to win the title 5 of 6x. (Jeremy McGrath did this 3 times (1994-1996)

Deegan Takes Red Plate

Haiden Deegan has never finished worse than 2nd in a 250SX championship.

  • 2025: missed the podium once, 5th at A1.
  • 2025: took the red plate at the 5th round of the 250 West division and won the title.
  • 2026: missed the podium at A1 – 4th.
  • Already owns the red plate.
Deegan’s Supercross Career

The only weakness Haiden Deegan has shown in the first two rounds is a bad start (12th 1st lap pos) at A1. Otherwise, he’s been great in qualifying (2nd at A1, 1st at SD) and won both his heat races.

There’s no signs of a root weakness. The fact that he’s got the red plate this early should concern his competitors.
