Just one hour northwest of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, this Crawfordsville, Indiana facility has hosted Pro Motocross since 2014 and will be the venue for the 2025 Motocross of Nations. The facility name comes from the late Bob “Ironman” Sloan, a two-time GNCC ATV champion and Indiana native.

  • Ken Roczen (450) and Marvin Musquin (250) were the first winners (2014)
  • Eli Tomac has 3 wins in 9 starts at Ironman. He leads both of those categories.
  • Tomac’s avg. finish is 3.1. He has 4 moto wins and 12 moto podiums.

More info and details at the Ironman Venue History page.

450MX Facts

  • Jorge Prado’s moto 1 holeshot at Washougal was the first non-Honda/Yamaha holeshot of 2025.
  • The last time a Kawasaki holeshot a 450 moto was Jason Anderson, RedBud 2024 (moto 2).
  • Jett Lawrence clinched the 3rd perfect season in the history of Pro Motocross here in 2023.
  • Eli Tomac has 3 wins at Ironman – most of anyone. He won them consecutively from 2019-21.
  • Chase Sexton has won the last 2 of 3 overalls at Ironman.
  • Jett Lawrence (40) needs 1 more moto win to tie James Stewart (41) for 8th all-time.
  • At Washougal, Justin Barcia passed the 8,000-championship-points-scored mark (all classes combined). He’s 8th all-time.
  • 15 riders have started all 16 motos this summer. Shoutout to Bryce Shelley, the lowest ranked rider amongst the 15. He’s in a 3-way tie for 29th place!

250MX Facts

  • If Haiden Deegan finishes within 3 points of Jo Shimoda at Ironman, he clinches the #1 seed for the SMX Playoffs.
  • Jo Shimoda is the only rider to finish top 10 in all 16 motos this season.
  • 9 different riders have earned holeshots in 2025, most since 2022 (10).
  • Haiden Deegan has tied Eli Tomac, Christophe Pourcel, and and Dylan Ferrandis for 11th all-time with 23 moto wins.
  • Haiden Deegan needs 1 more moto win to tie Blake Baggett for 10th all-time.
  • Garrett Marchbanks (3rd – 1st career overall podium) and Seth Hammaker (4th) both had career best overall finishes last week in Washougal.
  • Austin Forkner gets his first top 5 moto finish since round 11 Ironman 2023 and first top 5 overall since round 10 Budd’s Creek 2023.

SMX Points Battle

Chase Sexton winning Washougal creates a great points battle to keep our eyes on.

  • Chase Sexton currently sits 3rd and we have him projected to finish 2nd, passing the inactive Cooper Webb. Most important, with his win at Washougal, Chase Sexton now jumps in front of Jett Lawrence in the final projections but this is a battle to keep an eye on.
  • The difference between finishing second and third in seeding is +2 points.
  • We anticipate Cooper Webb will drop -3 positions and finish 5th in the standings with Sexton, Jett Lawrence, and Aaron Plessinger passing him.
  • Notable potential battle between Malcolm Stewart (currently 6th and averaging 19 points per round) and Hunter Lawrence who’s -48 pts back of Stewart but averaging +11 points more per round.
  • Also, keep an eye on Eli Tomac who’s -63 pts back but averaging +7 points more per round.

Battle for the Top 20 Cut
  • Valentin Guillod has finished season bests 8th overall the last two rounds and moved from 24th to 20th in the standings. Assuming he continues we have him finishing as high as 16th.
  • Mitchell Harrison (19th), Coty Schock (23rd), Harris Kullas (24th), and Benoit Paturel (25th) are all battling for the 20th spot.
  • Harrison (9th) and Kullas (11th) made great progress in Washougal whereas Schock (18th) and Paturel (33rd) had setbacks.
  • Shane McElrath and Justin Hill have confirmed they are racing the SMX Playoffs but will not be lining up for any Pro Motocross events.

250 SMX Points Battles

  • Haiden Deegan has a chance to wrap up the top seed in for the SMX World Championship Finals at Ironman if he can score within 3 points of Jo Shimoda (he owns the tie breaker).
  • Levi Kitchen is now into the top 10 in SMX Points and we anticipate he’ll climb as high as 6th if he can finish top 5 in the remaining 6 motos.
  • Similar to the 450s, there’s a 5-rider battle brewing for the final transfer spot: Jalek Swoll (25th), Lux Turner (23rd), Cullin Park (22nd), Max Anstie (29th), and Avery Long (26th) all have a chance.
  • We’ve word that both Cole Davies and Max Anstie want to return for the final 3 rounds of the Pro Motocross series and our forecast represents such. We’ll watch this closely.

Is Greatness Being Repeated?

From 2002 to 2005, Ricky Carmichael won 45 of 47 250/450MX overalls. Kevin Windham won the other two.

In 2000-2001, the GOAT won 16 of 23, but in 2002 he went on a streak of dominance that included three undefeated seasons (overalls).

In those 4 prime years of his career, he also won an astounding 85 of 94 motos.

The only other other rider to win an overall during those 4 years was Kevin Windham.

  • He won back-to-back overalls in 2003 with moto sweeps at Unadilla and Washougal.
  • Carmichael finished 2-2 for 2nd at both rounds.
  • Windham also won 7 of the other 9 motos (Reed and Ferry each won one moto).

Why is this relevant today? Because something similar is developing.

Since 2023, only two riders have won overalls in 450MX and 4 riders that have won a moto.

Jett Lawrence, as a rookie in 2023, was perfect winning every single moto, but was injured between rounds 5-6. He missed the final 6 races.

Chase Sexton has been his primary challenger, winning 8 overalls during this span. Six of the overall wins came in 2024 when Jett Lawrence was not racing.

  • Notably, Sexton has won the only two overalls that Jett Lawrence has lost in his career.
  • The first was Hangtown 2024, when Lawrence crashed on lap 1 (24th) and, effectively beat himself.
  • The second was Washougal 2025, where Jett (3-1) was straight beaten.

All-Time MX Points: Premier Class

Eli Tomac has now scored the third most points in Pro Motocross premier class racing and he needs just 38 more points to move into second.

  • Most impressive is his points per start at 40.6. Tomac is the only 250/450 rider with more than 100 starts AND 40 or more points per start.
  • Eli has longevity and performance – very rare – and it’s no surprise that he has the most top 3 finishes in sport history (all disciplines, all classes).
  • Passing Mike LaRocco as the all-time Pro Motocross points scored leader is possible for Tomac by the end of 2026. Assuming the 2026 season has 11 events, Tomac would need to increase his average points per start to 42.6.

Premier Class All-Time Points Scored
  • After RedBud, Justin Barcia passed Ken Roczen for 10th all-time and he was so excited about this news that he asked for a photo of the chart. We imagine he’s taped it to his bathroom mirror, Rocky Balboa style.
  • When we informed Barcia that he’d need to race into the 2029 season to pass LaRocco (based on Justin’s PPS avg.) he laughed and said, “2026 and 2027 for sure.”

450 Laps Led in a Season

Chase Sexton led all 16 laps of Washougal Moto 1, making him the 8th different 450 rider to lead laps in the 2025 season. It’s the most since 2021 and 2020 when 9 different riders led laps.

Jo Shimoda: Can He Get 3?

At Washougal, Shimoda got his second MX win of the season (5th of his career) and now he will try to do something he’s yet to accomplish: three wins in a single season.

At Washougal, Shimoda got his second MX win of the season (5th of his career) and now he will try to do something he’s yet to accomplish: three wins in a single season.

  • The last time Shimoda won two in a season: 2022 (RedBud and Unadilla).
  • Ironman is a good track for Shimoda. He has 3 moto wins and 5 moto podiums in 10 motos raced here.
  • He won Ironman 2023 (1-1)
  • His average lap 1 position kills him. It’s 6.9 in 2025 and 10.2 over his entire career. For reference: Haiden Deegan’s average lap 1 position in 2025 is 4.2.

Haiden Deegan Shoots for Top 10.

After starting the season with 8 moto wins in the first 10 motos, Haiden Deegan has only won 2 of the last 6.

  • Deegan is currently in a 4-way tie for 11th most 250MX moto wins all-time.
  • 6 motos remain in the 2025 MX season. Deegan’s MAX potential is 29, which would land him tied for 8th all-time.
  • For overall wins, Deegan now has 12 (tied with Eli Tomac – 13th all-time). He needs two more wins to claim a top 10 spot.
  • His max potential in 2025 is 15, which would give him sole possession of 8th, one win behind Guy Cooper (7th).
  • How impossibly good was James Stewart on a 125? Even if Deegan decided to race 250MX again and won every single moto between now and the end of 2026, he’d still come up three short of Stewart’s 54 moto wins.
  • Stewart’s 54 moto wins came in just 62 moto starts.
